Social media is always changing the way we communicate with each other, how we interact with brands and how we consume information. Successful content marketers are effectively utilising all social media platforms and delivering high-quality content consistently.

It’s unlikely to come as a shock to anyone that visual content is up to forty times more likely to be shared than all text content. One major aspect of this is video and around 65% of SMEs and larger operations considering it the most engaging communication channel for their audiences.

With online video predicted to be making up over 80% of all consumer traffic by 2022, the real question is, are you making the most of your social media presence with video? This blog aims to give you reasons why you need to use video on your social media platforms.

Video is incredibly easy to consume. Unlike large chunks of text which are easy to scroll past, even when passively scrolling, video attracts attention and captures your audience’s interest. It’s vital that you find a balance, making the videos long enough to get across your information but short enough to keep people wanting more. Make sure your intention is clear at the beginning of the video before people have a chance to scroll away. If in doubt – then go short.

All of your content should be optimised for SEO and videos are no exception. Ensure your content is relevant and that your captions and descriptions are compelling, so they register in the right searches. Each social media platform has different tools to help you reach your audience so be sure to utilise them.

It’s crucial to have a goal in mind before you post. Whether you want people to visit your site and drive up traffic, share the video or purchase your product, it’s important to include a call to action.

Make the most of relevant and trending topics. Video allows your brand to move quickly and smart brands will use this fast pace to become part of the conversation. You can also plan ahead. Certain hashtags trend every week (#MondayMotivation, for example) and span across a range of demographics. Use these to your advantage and be prepared to make your brand spark conversations.

There are free video tools out there. Try them. Do one or two just to test, then show your friends, get feedback and then starting posting them. They do not have to be perfect, they just have to be real.
